Member Spotlight: Steve Markowski

At the Business Buzz, Steve (left) enjoys a laugh with Alan Macomber.

Steve Markowski is known by many affectionate monikers: man about town, original Mad Man, uncle Steve… the list goes on. A true “man about town,” you won’t find Mr. Markowski staring at his laptop for hours on end. But you will find him all over New Bedford– at art openings, wellness walks, music and theater events, and local watering holes.  He joined us as a founding member in our beta space and has faithfully attended every happy hour, potluck, town hall, hot seat, and coffee hour since.

For anyone who has ever tried to build a community from scratch, Steve is a true angel: the person who shows up. He’s the guy who comes to your potluck with an entire ham, and the guy who brings sundae spoons to your ice cream float party. He is one of our city’s unsung heroes because he keeps the gears turning, just by showing up.

Without further ado, here’s a look at the inner workings of Mr. Steven Markowski:

What’s your profession?

If you have a gift that will benefit someone out there in your universe, it’s important to get that message out. In business, you get that message out so that when your prospect decides it’s time to get some of what you’ve got, you are the only and obvious choice. And that, my friends, is marketing.

Describe a typical day for you.

After info-immersion and breakfast, I check in with current and former customers, colleagues and most-wanted list. In-between and always, I scan the horizon for best practices and what’s old is new again. Write it up and ship it out.

What’s the biggest challenge you face at your job?

I’m always on the hunt for the folks who can tell me what the big news will be 18 months out.

Do you have a morning routine?

I’m up at dawn or ten (depending on what time yesterday ended). I consider and then skip the gym. Pot of coffee and WSJ in hand, and digital Washington Post and Standard-Times. National and political news on digital radio. Breakfast and email/newsletters around eleven.

Mr. Markowski (second from left) contributed nothing less than a box of Klondike bars to our waffle party.

What are your favorite productivity tips or hacks?

Pen and paper always at hand. A “DO NOT DO” list to cut back the crap that seeps into the routine. A bag of quarters for the meter.

What do you listen to during the day?

Old jazz and Postmodern Jukebox on Spotify. jazzonthetube.com
Podcasts: Mitch Joel, Sean D’Souza, Peter Diamandis et al.

How do you benefit from using a coworking space?

Groundwork is a hive of makers and doers shaping what’s coming next to New Bedford. I get to listen to and learn from a bunch of smart ambitious folks every day – people I would not have met otherwise.. Plus, it’s “Communications Central” for what’s going on in the city.

What’s in your digital toolbox?

NOT Facebook or Instagram. Otherwise nothing special.

What is the most surprising or unusual aspect of your life?

Having escaped the day-to-day grind of operating an import and distribution business, the lessened volume and velocity allow me a longer, deeper engagement with the things still on my plate. Super nice!

What inspires you?

Seeing in action a bunch of smart young people who are committed to making the world a better place (and maybe a buck or two).
