Member Spotlight: Adam Davenport

Adam Davenport contributes so much to the Groundwork! community: he runs our composting program, he helps to hold down the fort when Dena and I both have to be at an event, and most importantly he brings kindness, attentive listening, good conversation, and gentle vibes into our space.
Adam works hard and is involved in a bunch of interesting projects and initiatives that all center around gardening, food, and community well-being. In this interview, he shares what he is working on both at Groundwork! and outdoors:
What’s your profession?
I’m an entrepreneur, ecological garden/landscape designer, and teacher.
I co-founded Terra Cura about two years ago, and work locally with the Grow Education program and Food Security Network.
Describe a typical work day for you.
My typical day takes two forms. First either at Groundwork! or in Boston doing design work for gardens and park designs. Second out and about building gardens, growing plants, putting on education workshops and many more little tasks.
What’s the biggest challenge you face at your job?
Though all of my projects are related and similar they all have a unique aspect of design and need, and schedule. Juggling the organizing of them all and their deadlines is a constant juggle that has me working too late some nights.
Do you have a morning routine?
Sometimes a short yoga routine, sometimes a short hike with my dog in the summer, sometimes right to work!

What are your favorite productivity tips or hacks?
Consistent exercise on a regular basis. I also like to get up and get moving, then eat a big sustaining breakfast.
What do you listen to during the day?
A mix of NPR, old cd’s left to me by a friend, and a rotation of Pandora stations. I’ll also have some podcast streaks of listening, usually on holistic health or environmental stuff.
How do you benefit from using a coworking space?
It’s a new home, that’s also an office. I was having a hard time separating my home office from my home, having a place to go in the morning makes all the difference. The best part though is the diversity of people, skills and mindsets. You never know who you will meet next, or what conversation will take place!

What’s in your digital toolbox?
AutoCad mostly, along with the Microsoft suites. I am slowly building my Google Sketchup skills and hope to learn Adobe Creative Suite in the near future.
What is the most surprising or unusual aspect of your life?
I have a new little sister that my parents adopted last year, she’s an amazing almost three-year-old.
What inspires you?
The fact that most of the answers to our social and environmental problems are simple. Really to fix MOST of our ill’s just takes a change in mindset and habit. I have hopes for the millennial generation and beyond to break the tipping point on this. We are connected and have more resources than we ever have!
