How coworking helps combat the winter blues

Each new year there are countless articles, blogs, and social media posts claiming to help us reinvent, remake or better ourselves. And while bettering yourself is a worthy pursuit, it can often feel overwhelming. Winter in particular can be a difficult time of the year for many. When the days are short and social interactions are few, many find themselves feeling lonely, unmotivated, and down. At a time when things may feel the toughest, we are often asked to do the most. If the winter blues have been getting you down, one thing you can do is join a coworking space. Coworking gets us out of the house and around people, both of which help tremendously in combating the winter blues.

Find a sense of community

One way joining a coworking space can help lift your spirits is by giving you a sense of community. Being around other people and sharing space with them makes us feel that we are part of something bigger than just ourselves. When we feel we are part of a community, we feel better. It’s as simple as that. Being in a coworking space gives us the opportunity to interact with different people and therefore we feel less lonely, more connected, and an over-all sense of belonging.

Change your scenery

Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need to jumpstart your motivation and your mood. Switching up where you work allows you to get out of the house and into a new space. Novelty is key to happiness and if you work where you live, eat and sleep, you’re not getting much of it. When we are feeling low, often times we want to isolate, but research shows that the best thing we can do for our creativity and mood is change our surroundings. Even a seemingly small change of scenery can greatly improve your mood and productivity.

Establish a daily routine

Having a daily routine is a critical part of establishing a healthy work/life balance, and maintaining your overall mental health. As Groundwork member Abe Stein says,

Groundwork has been a critical factor for me when it comes to establishing a consistent routine for my remote-working life. While remote work affords us the luxury of flexibility, that same freedom can also present challenges to setting work habits that support a healthy work/life balance. The fact that Groundwork is always here for me with warm coffee and a free seat, and that communication from the staff is clear and consistent, has been so important to me.

Being part of a coworking space helps create a routine organically. If you don’t have an office to go to, going into a coworking space consistency for certain days and times can give you a needed schedule you may otherwise not have. Being consistent with the schedule you create for yourself in the coworking space helps keep you on track in other areas of your life as well, helping support a healthy work/life balance.
