YOUR WEEKEND: Drawing Social; Haskell Plant Sale and Greek Food

FRIDAY, SEPT. 16 – Get yourself right here to Groundwork! for a DRAWING SOCIAL organized by member Shelley Cardoos. You don’t need skills or supplies; just be prepared to have fun; the Drawing Social is a night of drawing games! “We’ll have stations with collage, drawing games and animation,” writes Cardoos – the E for All SouthCoast Director who is taking the night off from launching her newest side endeavor, the downtown store Hippo. RSVP here – or just come to Groundwork tonight at 6:00 p.m. and expect to stay until about 9:00.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 17 – HASKELL PUBLIC GARDENS was a playground for Groundwork!’s co-founder Dena Haden and member Steven Froias. The two are also artists and were part of the big MAPS & LEGENDS outdoor art installation and gallery show at this hidden gem of a park on Shawmut Avenue here in New Bedford. Today, the Gardens host the HASKELL FALL PLANT SALE from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. They write, “We will feature unique and rare plants, several that can be found on the Haskell property, all that are ready to be planted this Fall! We will have a mix of small ornamental plants to trees and everything in between.” Haskell Public Gardens is located at 787 Shawmut Avenue; plenty of street parking available.

FRI. SEPT 16, SAT. SEPT. 17 & SUN. SEPT. 18 – Both Groundwork! co-founders, Sarah Athanas and Dena Haden boast Greek ancestry. That’s probably why they each possess the wisdom of Aristotle and the grace of Aphrodite. But regardless of their remarkable heritage, we’d urge readers to head to the annual St. George Greek Festival over at 188 Cross Road in Dartmouth anyway. Because you know what to expect – and you know you’ll love it: A celebration of Greek culture, dancing – and FOOD! Souvlaki, stuffed grape leaves, gyros, baklava…oh, man!
