Recommended Listening: Sarah’s top Podcasts
Steven, Dena, and myself are hard at work recording and editing a batch of episodes for the premiere of Ground Control, Groundwork’s very own podcast. We all get inspiration, motivation, and ideas from listening to an array of podcasts on our own, and Steven had a brilliant idea to highlight our favorites here. So without further ado, here’s what I’m listening to:
Our National Conversation about Conversations About Race
This podcast bills itself as a lively multiracial, interracial conversation about the ways we can’t talk, don’t talk, would rather not talk, but intermittently, fitfully, embarrassingly do talk about culture, identity, politics, power, and privilege in our pre-post-yet-still-very-racial America.
The four hosts are personable, informed, intelligent… and opinionated. Listening is like being privy to a witty, intellectual dinner party. I love this podcast because it keeps me on my toes, opens my mind to new perspectives, and frankly gives me hope in an era of institutionalized racism.
On Being
I’ll have to apologize to Dena here because surely On Being tops her list of favorites too. This podcast is a series of conversations about religion, spirituality, and the meaning of life. Sound overbearing? It’s not. Krista Tippett masterfully guides conversations with her guests that are meandering, fascinating and insightful. Some of my favorite guests have been Joanna Macy who talks about her wild love for the world, and Gordon Hempton who discusses the importance of silence.
Recently, Krista Tippett interviewed Anil Dash about ethics in the tech industry— if you have an internet connection, you must listen!
Matt Report
I’m a WordPress nerd– in an indirect way, I’ve built my career and my business on and around WordPress. Matt Report is awesome because (1) it keeps me informed about what is developing in the WordPress space and (2) it documents the stories of the real men and women who make WordPress what it is today. It’s no secret that I like people, and I’m always looking to magnify the humanity behind digital screens. So Matt Report wins big marks from me. Plus, Matt works at Groundwork, and he’s an awesome human himself.
Coworking Weekly
(Sorry Dena, I’m stealing another one of your favorites.) Coworking Weekly is the podcast of Alex Hillman, co-founder of Indy Hall. It’s about running a coworking space, and everything that attaches to and spurs off of coworking, which is pretty much everything. We’ve interviewed Alex for this blog before and it is one of our highest-ranking all-time posts thanks to Alex’s many insights. Coworking Weekly never fails to deliver new ideas and inspiration for those of us in the coworking industry and is definitely worth a listen for those of you who simply care about people and community.
RadioLab
No podcast list is complete, in my mind, without a mention of RadioLab. This highly-produced, reliably mind-blowing podcast is the brainchild of Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumrad, although the team has grown to include many others. RadioLab simply bills itself as a show about curiosity, but with episode titles like Failing, Bliss, and Blood, I’d suggest that they are unpacking what it means to be human through the lens of science and with great storytelling.
Krulwich joins Alex Hillman with a place in the Groundwork! blog archive. Although we haven’t interviewed him (yet!) his idea about “networking in low places” gets a mention in this post about coworking with friends.
That wraps up my list, although I’ve got a long list of recommendations that friends have been suggesting since I mentioned our foray into podcasting here at Groundwork. I’m curious, do you have any recommendations? Tweet them to @Groundwork_NB or send us a message.
