Alanna Nelson weaves playfulness with purpose

We’re excited to spotlight Alanna Nelson, a Groundwork member whose work spans history, publishing, and creative practice. As Executive Director of the Sippican Historical Society, editor and publisher of Sippizine, and a mixed-media artist, Alanna balances focused project work with time in her studio and deep community involvement. Inspired by everyday moments, time on the water, and the many ways people make things happen, her creative life is both intentional and fluid. We’re thrilled to share more about Alanna and the work that fuels her days.

What’s your profession?

I’m Executive Director of the Sippican Historical Society, editor and publisher of Sippizine, and a mixed-media artist.

Describe a typical work day for you.

Depending on the day of week, I’ll focus on one client/project until mid-afternoon. From there, it’s volunteer work or time creating in my studio. Several nights a month, I have Town-related meetings, so typical is flexible.

What’s the biggest challenge you face at your job?

I’m trying to get better at asking myself, “Should you do this or should someone else?” Being a small business owner, I’m in the habit of just buckling down to do it – who cares if someone else could do it better, faster or cheaper?

Do you have a morning routine?

Whenever possible, I have breakfast with my husband. Wednesday mornings, I head to Mentor Cafe at Groundwork or attend virtually.

What are your favorite productivity tips or hacks?

What are my top 3 things today and how do those align to longer term goals?

What do you listen to during the day?

When I’m writing, no extra sounds, but in my home studio, MVY radio, podcasts and my own music – Habib Koite, Mozart, Brandi Carlile, Erroll Garner were on yesterday’s playlist.

How do you benefit from using a coworking space?

It’s a great place to dig into a project and just as great for socialization!

What’s in your digital toolbox?

Google Drive, Trello and WordPress are the top three, but there are so many others!

What inspires you?

Sometimes it’s mud puddle or a piece of pie. Any time on the water, whatever the weather. The myriad of ways that people make things happen.
