Meet our Marketing Intern: Sarah Riley
We are so excited to welcome Sarah Riley to the Groundwork! team. Aside from having an awesome name, Sarah brings some serious social-media savvy to the table along with curiosity and a willingness to learn.
Sarah, a senior student at UMass Dartmouth, is bravely piloting our intern program as we introduce her to the world of coworking, social media marketing, and blogging. Be sure to say hello the next time you see her in our space and keep an eye out for her contributions to our marketing content. In this interview, Sarah shares the scoop on life as a college student. Remember those days?
What’s your major?
I am currently a senior at UMass Dartmouth with a major in Marketing. Only two more semesters before the real world!
Describe a typical day for you.
Everyday is really different for me, which I love! Since my days aren’t always consistent, my planner is my lifeline. When it comes to free time and outside of classes I do anything from hiking to simply driving around with the windows down playing my favorite songs.
What’s the biggest challenge you face at school?
The biggest challenge I face at school is trying to fit everything I want/need to do in such a short period of time. From blood drives to 3 hour long classes, sometimes it can be difficult prioritizing and giving up certain goals for the day to support larger ones.
Do you have a morning routine?
My morning routine consists of checking every social media site I have as soon as I wake up, even though very few people post between 11pm-8am. Depending upon my schedule for the day I try to fit in the gym as often as I can. After that and a nice cup of coffee I am ready to take on the day.
What are your favorite productivity tips or hacks?
My favorite productivity hack when it comes to schoolwork is putting my phone on airplane mode and putting it away. I find the Internet to be distracting at times because honestly who would rather study for an accounting test than see what the latest news is on Twitter?
What do you listen to during the day?
I listen to all different types of music depending upon my mood but I always have to throw in Dave Matthews Band at some point. Typically I listen to The Black Keys, X Ambassadors, and Kings of Leon to get me through the day. While I use to religiously use iTunes Radio as a source of music, Spotify has grown on me.
How do you benefit from using a coworking space?
While I am still a student, a coworking space helps me develop connections and get a hands-on sense rather than strictly a classroom setting. Since it is such a unique setting, I get to experience a new way of networking and seeing a community come together to accomplish goals.
What’s in your digital toolbox?
My digital toolbox consists of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and a number of other popular social media sites. One I just downloaded is the Dunkin Donuts Perks App that I find very useful, especially the Monday after a Patriots’ win (free coffee!).
What is the most surprising or unusual aspect of your life?
My friends find it a little strange, but I love bumper stickers. While I don’t have any on my car, aside from my parking sticker, I feel that bumper stickers are a cool way to express your self. For example, on my computer I have stickers from ski resorts, bands, and an assortment of other interests in my life. They can be conversation starters for people who may not have known their similar love for Chippis from Mirasol’s or the infamous “stick figure family”.
What inspires you?
As I have gotten older I am starting to find inspiration in accomplishing goals. Whether they are small or large, the satisfaction of completing something that has been on my mind gives me the drive to accomplish more and grow as a person.
