Meet our new intern: Lisa Schiavone

Lisa Shiavone

Meet Lisa, our new marketing intern.

Lisa Schiavone participated in a group marketing research project for Groundwork! last semester and we were impressed by her team leadership and communication skills. We asked her to join us as a marketing intern for spring semester and happily, she said yes! Lisa is an unusual combination: part business major and part nature lover, which is exactly what we like to see around here.

We are excited to see her grow and contribute to the GW team in the next few weeks. Read about what inspires her and how she stays motivated in this interview:

What’s your major?

I am a Small Business Management Entrepreneurship major.

Describe a typical day for you.

A typical day for me includes my morning routine, class, work, dinner and hopefully the evening off. Pretty much the typical college student day. I always try to keep myself busy when the sun is up. I find that after sunset, my brain turns off and I become useless at processing information. I get a lot more done during the summer.

What’s the biggest challenge you face at school?

The biggest challenge that I face at school is dealing with my perfectionist self. It takes me hours to write an email to a professor because I over-analyze every word I write. I am an extremely laid back person in my everyday life but when it comes to school work, not so much.

Do you have a morning routine?

I like to start my day off strong. I jump out of bed, throw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and pop my favorite K-Cup into the Keurig. I’m not a huge fan of hot coffee so I put my mug in the freezer and do the dishes that I neglected the night before. On nicer days I like to eat my breakfast outside on the porch and then open up my laptop and check emails, the news, and social media.

What are your favorite productivity tips or hacks?

  • Do everything while it’s fresh in your mind. I find that if I put something off once, I will continue to put it off until I forget about it.
  • Try to complete as much as you can between 8am and 5pm. A daily deadline really helps motivate me to get things done, and then I reward myself with my evening “me time”.
  • Find something you like about what you’re working on, or at least lie to yourself and pretend you’re interested in it.

What do you listen to during the day?

I usually only listen to music when I’m driving or hanging out with friends. Most of the time I have the local pop radio station on or my current favorite song on repeat. I’ve probably played John Legend’s “Love Me Now”, thousands of times in the last few months.

How do you benefit from using a coworking space?

As a senior in college, a coworking space allows me to build my network and meet individuals from all different industries and backgrounds. I have the opportunity to put myself out there, join the “real world” and learn from other members’ experiences, rather than from a book in a class.

What’s in your digital toolbox?

My Mac and cell phone are usually always with me. I use Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook daily, to stay connected and up to date with friends and family. I love the Notes app. I have notes on everything; daily thoughts, shopping list, ideas, to-do list, songs I like… the list goes on. The most recent addition to my digital toolbox is a GoPro Session, which I am crazy about, but still trying to figure it out.

What is the most surprising or unusual aspect of your life?

I love all animals from horses to snakes with the exception of chickens and seagulls. They stress me out (long story). This often makes my life difficult because I work on a farm with about 14 chickens and my favorite place on Earth is the beach…

What inspires you?

I have so many great people in my life that inspire me in different ways but I have to say that my biggest inspiration comes from nature. Corny, I know, but our world is such a beautiful place, it motivates me everyday.
