Happy Hammock Day!

After a long meh of a chilly, wet Spring, Summer is finally in full swing here on the Southcoast. Vitamin D-deprived New Englanders rejoice!

And with this great sunny weather, the mad scramble begins. We have to make the most of these warm summer days before they’re gone again! Boating and swimming and fishing and golfing and hiking and biking and surfing — and — and — well, LOTS of fun activities under the sun. We have an amazing outdoor life here on the Southcoast — yet only so many weeks of great summer weather to enjoy it. We have a lot to pack into a short time!

But for just today, maybe we should take a moment to step back from the go-go-go activities. Because July 22nd is a lesser-known “holiday” that one man started because he wanted everyone to remember to slow down and relax. To remind everyone to take a moment to soak in the sun… comb the beach… to swing away a relaxing summer day in a hammock.

Because today, my friends, is Hammock Day.

Origin of Hammock Day:

Hammock Day was created by Bob Matthews, of Holiday Insights in 2008. Bob says that our lives are normally busy and hectic. Summers is a special time to lay back, enjoy the weather and re-charge our batteries. What better way to do this, than from the comfort of a hammock under a shady tree!?

Hammock Day is appropriately celebrated right in the middle of the Dog Days of summer (July 3 though August 11th).

Hammock Day exists to enjoy summer as it should be enjoyed. People celebrate Hammock Day by spending as much time relaxing on it as possible. Getting out of your hammock to get a snack, or your favorite summer beverage is okay. But, it is not a day for work. Cutting the lawn is forbidden on this day.

So wherever you are today, take a few minutes (or hours!) to relax in honor of Hammock Day. And hey, if you still have to work, no worries, Groundwork’s got you covered. (In fact, we are very much in support of napping at work…)

Happy Hammock Day!
