Cool Off This Summer! Beaches Perfect for Taking a Dip
If you’re ever wanting to take a break and enjoy the weather, go ahead and dip your toes in at one of these locations. Whether you’re looking for a quick getaway, or wanting to spend the day at the beach, I think these places will be perfect for you.
Fort Phoenix, Fairhaven
One of the best places to go put your feet in the water is Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven. This state park captures Fairhaven’s historical beauty with beautiful views of Buzzard’s Bay and the neighboring city of New Bedford. Sitting upon a grassy hill are actual cannons from the Civil War, which is something you don’t see every day. However, you will see children playing, couples walking their dog, and you might even see a seal swimming out in the distance. The fort is accompanied by a public beach, so whether you want to lay out, go for a swim, or walk along the rocks to dip your toes in, Fort Phoenix is a great place to visit this summer.
Demarest Lloyd, Dartmouth
Another great beachy area to check out is Demarest Lloyd in Dartmouth. If you’re looking for a calm, relaxing area to take a dip, this is definitely one you should visit. The shallow water here is usually warm and bath-like—perfect for going for a swim. This state park is very family-oriented, and it is an especially safe environment for the kids. I remember going here every summer growing up, and it’s still one of my favorite spots to chill out and enjoy the beautiful weather. You could make this either a quick stop during some down time, or even spend the entire day.
West Island Beach, Fairhaven
West Island Beach is a modest little beach located in Fairhaven. Although it is on the smaller side, it is a great place to go when you need to take a little break. I’m not going to lie, it is a little ways down the neck in Fairhaven, but that’s okay! If you roll the windows down, play some music, and enjoy the ride, you’re going to be happy you made it all the way out there; it is the perfect getaway. This little beach is perfect for taking a walk along the shore line, cooling off, and enjoying the breeze. I know my dog loves splashing around in the water here too!
Horseneck Beach, Westport
Horseneck Beach might have to be my absolute favorite beach in this area. Located in Westport, this beach is the perfect place to spend the day when the weather is hot and you need to cool off. The waves here are incredible! If you’re the type who loves to swim and ride the waves, this is the one you have to go to. Although it’s popular in the summer, the beach itself is so vast you will have no problem finding a place to lay your things down, enjoy the weather, and soak up as much sun as you can. I’d definitely bring lunch and stay awhile, but be sure to wait half an hour before you go swimming—which might be hard since it’s so easy to spend the whole day in the water.
