YOUR WEEKEND: We won’t go back
Beginning FRIDAY, DEC. 2 – Start your weekend early in downtown New Bedford with a SHOP & STROLL. All the great new and old establishments you’ve been reading about (here and here) will be participating in this two-day special event – culminating with the city Christmas tree lighting on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 5:00 p.m. We hear Santa Claus may even make an appearance – and Harry Potter fans may want to see who, who’s going to be at Hippo that day… see the entire line-up of events here.
SATURDAY, DEC. 3 – We know Devin Byrnes, the owner of the fab Destination Soups on Union Street, as a gentlemen chef. He’s the kind of guy who leaves DSoup’s famous Mac & Cheese in the Groundwork! refrigerator for you after you’ve been spent two days running a book festival. But, the truth is…he’s also a madman. With a guitar. And amplifier. As one half of PICNIC LUNCH, see Devin let loose tonight at No Problemo as he performs with the equally mad-talented Mike Ribeiro in the heavy metal band. Also making some noise with them will be Hill Show and Wishroom. The show is free! Buy a burrito and beer to support the musical anarchy, though. No Problemo is located on the right side of the wall at the corner of Purchase and William Streets.
SUNDAY, DEC. 4 – Kilburn Mills Studios can feel like it’s at the far edge of the world, sitting as it does down on the peninsula at W. Rodney French Blvd. by barbed wire on the hurricane barrier. But for those in the know, that’s part of the former textile building’s funky charm. Most definitely in the know is gallery owner Judith Klein and the patrons of JUDITH KLEIN ART GALLERY, located in the building at 127 W. Rodney French, Door #31. Today, Judith and many participating artists celebrate the gallery’s eighth anniversary in this sweet spot overlooking Clarks Cove with an Opening Reception for a fine art exhibit from noon – 4:00 p.m. Find the gallery by driving around back past the antique center and be prepared to enter an enchanted space. RSVP here.
SUNDAY, DEC. 4 – You can probably get a sense of what this forum discussing the upcoming Trump presidency is all about from it’s title: WE WON’T GO BACK. So, choose to go forward today beginning at 1:00 p.m. with a march from the Coalition for Social Justice office at 105 William Street to the First Unitarian Universalist Church, corner of Union and Eighth Streets, for the discussion at 2:00 p.m. The free forum talking Trump also provides free child care and plans a community potluck. Not a bad start to the counter-revolution… see more here.
BONUS: Wednesday, Dec. 7 – Can’t let a month – even a packed, holiday month – go by without a proper #NOTworking Business Buzz. This month’s edition takes place tonight right here at Groundwork! from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Come enjoy beer from Buzzards Bay Brewery, ping pong, and darts. Bring some winter wear for our clothing drive to support New Bedford Homeless Advocates (we’ll take used or new coats, new socks, underwear, gloves, hats, and scarves) and bring a friend – all are welcome to attend and get festive. A $5 donation for drinks would fill us with good cheer, too.
