Birthday Soli & Fiji fundraiser
FRIDAY, MARCH 23 – One of our terrific members, Carissa Wills-DeMello, has come up with a meaningful way to celebrate her birthday. Tonight at Groundwork! (1213 Purchase Street, NB) from 6:00-9:00 p.m., she’s a hosting a birthday “soli.” Carissa explains, “There are no words for what Fiji has meant, and will always mean, to me. So, in the spirit of thanking those who make each year in life possible and beautiful, I’m having a 27th birthday celebration turned fundraiser, for the village that I call home in Fiji: Nabasovi.
“Two years after devastating Cyclone Winston made its way through Fiji, the Nabasovi District School library has officially re-opened it’s doors. All that’s missing are FULL bookshelves!
“Stop by Groundwork! co-working space for a SOLI (fijian for community fundraising event) to benefit the littlest of my friends and family on Koro Island. Bring a school worthy iVola (book) in good condition and a suggested $2 shipping donation.
We’ll have some kakana (snacks), bilo ni Yaqona (bowls of Fijian Kava), yaloyalo (photos) & levu na isere (and plenty of music)! Whether you stop by for a minute or the night, I hope to see you there.”
Strand Theatre Photography Workshop
SATURDAY, MARCH 24 – Vanishing New England and Cape Verdean Association in New Bedford invite you to come photograph the historic Strand Theatre on Acushnet Avenue today. They will host two workshop sessions. The first will be from 8:00 – 10:30 a.m. and the second from 11:00 – 1:30 p.m. The cost ($25 at door) will go toward restoration of the Theatre. During the three hours, you will be able to explore the theatre at your own pace. Photographer Bryan Buckley will be on site to answer questions and help with photography. Bring a flashlight, as some sections do not have power. Email: bryanabuckley@gmail.com to reserve your place. The Theater opened in 1905 and has changed hands many times since then. Last month, W.H.A.L.E. announced that is was partnering with the theater for a complete renovation.
Lunar teeth: Let’s Try Again edition
SATURDAY, MARCH 24 – The quarterly performance art showcase, LUNAR TEETH happens tonight at The Ropeworks, 123 Sawyer Street, NB from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Hosted by Andy Anello, it is a quarterly performance art forum held on or around the equinoxes and solstices. “It is a place to try out new ideas that challenge traditional genres,” he writes. Tonight’s performers are: Carl Simmons; id m theft able; Meyer Brown; Novikova ; and Stratosphere Giant (Improvisational Performance Experiment). BYOB and plan to hang out after!
The Winter LGBTQ Winter Film Series
SUNDAY, MARCH 24 – The third film in the four part LGBTQ Winter Film Series, “Two Spirit” is a documentary that explores two spirit identities within First Nations’ cultures. It also discusses the tragic murder of one such two spirit person, a nádleehí, named Freddie “FC” Martinez. Screening is at 2:00 p.m. today in the NB Whaling National Historic Park theater at 33 William Street and it is free to attend. A performance by local Narragansett youth, Sherente Williams, who is also two spirit, follows the film.
Birdman Live!
SUNDAY, MARCH 25 – Big show at the Zeiterion Theatre tonight: Experience the celebrated movie Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) with a live soundtrack from composer and renowned drummer Antonio Sanchez! He performs his GRAMMY® Award-winning score live on The Z stage while the 2015 Oscar® winner for Best Picture unfolds on screen. It happens from 8:00-11:00 p.m. and you can get tickets here.
