Meet our Summer Intern: Erin Baker

Erin Baker

Meet our summer intern Erin Baker! A marketing major at UMass Dartmouth, Erin joins Sarah Riley in our growing line of industrious student helpers. Erin hails from just down the river in Acushnet, so we will be using her local knowledge for help with site-specific print advertising. You will also see Erin lending a hand at our evening events, and you will hear from her across our social media platforms. (She’s already proving to be a fast study in Hootsuite.)

In this interview, Erin shares a bit about student life at UMass Dartmouth. Read on and be sure to say hello to Erin when you see her at Groundwork!

What’s your major at school?

My major in school is Marketing

Describe a typical day for you.

A typical day for me consists of waking up and heading right to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. While enjoying my coffee and breakfast, I take the time to scroll through all of my social media, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, to catch up on posts before I begin my day. After I finish breakfast I usually head to the gym for about an hour to get my daily exercise out of the way. Once I get home, I take the time to accomplish what I need to get done for the day. This could be homework, classes, laundry, cleaning, etc. By the time I complete everything, it is usually just about time for dinner. After dinner, I take the time to relax and watch some TV before I head to bed. I like to keep myself fairly busy and productive throughout the day, and most of the time I like to get to bed pretty early.

What’s the biggest challenge you face at school?

I would say the biggest challenge I face at school is to just stay organized and plan my time out ahead of time. Often times, classes will have assignments due on the same day or around the same time, so it is really important to manage my time well and make sure I pace myself with each project in a way that will allow me to have time to complete everything. I can definitely see a difference between my time management skills now, as officially a senior, compared to a few years ago during my freshman year of college. Organization and time management will help me with many things in life, so improving these skills is very important to me.

Do you have a morning routine?

The first thing I do in the morning is try to wake up at a decent time, even if I don’t have to be up early that day. I find that sleeping past 9 o’clock is refreshing every once in awhile, but so much of the day gets wasted from sleeping in too long. Once I wake up, I head to my kitchen for a cup of coffee. I really enjoy my cup of coffee in the morning, and I feel like it starts my day on a good note. Along with coffee I will have some breakfast, and then start to get ready for the day. I brush my teeth and wash my face before heading to my room to put on makeup and do my hair. This is only if I am going somewhere important, otherwise I will skip my makeup, put my hair in a pony tail, and pick out my outfit for the day. I am then ready to head out the door!

What are your favorite productivity tips or hacks?

My favorite productivity tip/hack is to just stay organized and write things down. Whether I type a note on my phone, write it in my planner, or just jot it down on a piece of paper, I find that writing things down makes it easier to remember to do them. Another tip I like to use is one that I found to be helpful on a day to day basis. This is the idea that if something takes less than five minutes to do, you should just do it ‘now’, or in the moment. If you procrastinate little things that would just be easier to get done right away, you will have a lot of things built up and waiting to be done when you could take that time to focus on a bigger or more important task. The feeling of being all caught up with work is relieving and leaves me more motivated to accomplish the next task.

What do you listen to during the day?

During the day I love to listen to music, especially when I am driving. I have a wide variety of types of music that I enjoy, so I switch it up everyday by listening to different Pandora stations. Listening to music while I am driving makes it more enjoyable and go by faster. I also listen to upbeat music at the gym to get me motivated.

How do you benefit from using a coworking space?

I think someone can benefit greatly from using a coworker space because they are able to meet new people who may have similar interests, jobs, or ideas as themselves. Additionally, working in a group environment allows for people to bounce ideas off each other, ask for help, or and engage in conversations.

What’s in your digital toolbox?

My favorite digital tool would definitely be my iPhone. Because I always carry my phone with me, I added everything I need on a daily basis on to it. Some of my most used apps contribute to my productivity throughout the day. For example, I have two email apps on my phone. One is for my yahoo email, and one is for my school email. By having these apps, I am able to check my email throughout the day and stay on top of it, which is helpful considering I get multiple emails from my professors, classmates, etc. that I need to keep up with. Another app I use on a daily basis is my banking app. With this app I am able to check my bank account, deposit checks, etc. from my phone. This is helpful to me when making purchases. Along with these apps, of course I use the texting app every single day. This is my number one most used app. Other than these apps, I would have to say my social media apps are my favorite. I use Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram multiple times a day in order to keep up with my friends and family. The use of social media allows me to stay connected with these people and learn about what goes on in their everyday lives. Collectively, these apps are the most important to me throughout each day.

What is the most surprising or unusual aspect of your life?

The most surprising aspect of my life is that I am slowly attempting to transition into being vegan.

What inspires you?

My biggest inspiration is my mom. I have witnessed everything she has accomplished in her life, and I am surrounded by what she has to show for how hard she has worked. She inspires me to work hard and give my all in order to reach my dreams. In addition, she inspires me to just focus on being happy and positive every single day. Her positive energy and outlook on life makes me want to live my life the same way.
