Member Spotlight: Liam Connor
Liam Connor is a local photographer who spends his days fully submerged in photography – whether it’s a fashion shoot or a sea side wedding – you’ll find him behind the lens. With a lifelong interest and passion for fashion and music, it’s no wonder his artistic vision is so unique. He’s a pleasure to talk to and loves learning about new things happening here on the South Coast. How lucky we are to have him here at Groundwork! He spent the morning here recently, and took some time to tell us a little more about himself.
What’s your profession?
I’m a photographer. I do some freelance work, but I also work for two amazing women owned businesses.
I work for Elissa Paquette, owner of Calico in Downtown New Bedford where I photograph their online catalog, and assist with behind the scenes tasks, like steaming clothes for shoots, and editing/uploading images to the website.
The other amazing woman is Elizabeth LaDuca, the Best of Boston 2018 Wedding Photographer. I’m her behind the scenes guy as well as her assistant and second shooter for weddings with her all over New England.
Describe a typical work day for you.
A typical work day for me really varies, but usually when I’m at Calico HQ, receiving new clothes that we got in and tagging them, I’ll also pull a specific size form the new clothes we get depending on the model so we can shoot it for the website. For the shooting day it’s pretty laid back for the most part but it can get a little hectic from time to time. For weddings I’m up bright and early to get ready and out the door, usually heading to Cape Cod or Newport for a stunning beachside wedding.
What’s the biggest challenge you face at your job?
I feel like the biggest challenge I face as a photographer is to stay inspired, and also to not be so hard on myself when I start to compare my work to other photographers.
Do you have a morning routine?
I have an alarm set for 7am everyday but I usually just hit snooze and fall back asleep!
What are your favorite productivity tips or hacks?
I really don’t have any productivity tips or hacks. So if anyone has some, I’d love to hear them!
What do you listen to during the day?
I’ve been loving Marina’s new album called Love+Fear. Only half of it is out right now but I’m excited for the rest to be released.
How do you benefit from using a coworking space?
I benefit from using a coworking space by talking to new people. It’s also a great change of scenery from my kitchen table!
What’s in your digital toolbox?
Lightroom and Photoshop are a must for me, to cull down and edit all my photographs. I also love Filmborn and VSCO to edits photos when I’m on the go on my phone. And my new favorite obsession is an app called Unfold to create beautiful and curated instagram stories.
What is the most surprising or unusual aspect of your life?
The most unusual aspect in my life is that I don’t have a regular 9 to 5 job. I work Friday through Monday all day whether it’s shooting for Calico or shooting a wedding, then processing all the clothes to put them up on the website. The rest of my week is pretty laid back.
What inspires you?
Flipping through Magazines like Vogue and V to see the fashion ads inspires me, and I still love the tactile feel of seeing photographs printed out. I do find inspiration through Instagram but that’s usually a double edged sword for me where I start to compare myself to other photographers that I follow.
