Art Exhibit: Other Worlds

October 12, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for a reception in the Groundwork Gallery to celebrate the group show “Other Worlds.”

The show will be on view Oct 2 – 31, 2017.

About the show:

Other Worlds is an exhibition of painting and prints by four recent graduates of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The visual works of Zachary M. White, Bruce Bailey, Will Wolf, and L. Noah Barrett will be accompanied by the original compositions of sound artist Christopher Bailey. Each artist featured brings a unique perspective in regards to their materials, methods, and imagery ranging from semi-representational to fully abstract.

Maps and mapping are central in the prints and paintings of Zachary M. White, the lines and layers that make up much of the work have been placed and formed as a result of the visual mapping of the subject matter. The literary works of William Butler Yeats, Thomas Hardy, and William Gibson haunted painter and retired software engineer Bruce Bailey and lead to the creation of his series of abstract paintings. 2016 MFA graduate Will Wolf’s ‘nontwo-dimensional paintings’ were created as a means for the artist to explore emotions andmemories and describe the feelings associated as a way of examining his personal growth since childhood. Painter and illustrator Noah Barrett’s ‘invented still-life’ pieces create surrealist spaces wrought from memory, experience, and emotion that are formed into hybridized objects as a way to provide viewers a more complex narrative. Composer

Christopher Bailey drew inspiration from the works of the four visual artists to produce his sound/musical accompaniment that is meant to serve as a ‘random walk’ around a map of sound objects.

About the artists:

Zachary M. White

Zachary White was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He earned his BFA in Visual Design-Photography with a minor in Fine Arts-Printmaking in May 2015 and later a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in May 2017 from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Zachary’s work has been published in A Picture History of New Bedford: Volume One 1602-1925 (Spinner Publications, 2013), Reconstructing History: The Redevelopment of New Bedford in the
20th Century (Self-published, 2015), and A Picture History of New Bedford: Volume Two 1925-1980 (Spinner Publications, 2015). His work, which is heavily influenced by New Bedford
and its history as well as cartography, has also been included in various exhibitions throughout Massachusetts.

Bruce Bailey

Bruce is a retired software engineer living in South Dartmouth who has returned to his first passion of painting after 45 years of work in the steel, shipbuilding, and aerospace industries.
His experience in adapting from the industrial economy of the 1960’s to the current digital multiverse has given him an informed sense of history. He and his wife have three grown
children and three grandchildren. When asked he is happy to go on for hours describing what it is like to work in a blast
furnace, build double-hulled oil tankers or test flight control software for helicopters, but, if provoked, he is also capable of a few words about painting, literature, and music.

Will Wolf

William Wolf was born on October 2, 1988 in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. He graduated with his BFA in Painting from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and his MFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Along with his studio practice, Wolf has worked in community education with at-risk youth in his community. He currently lives and works in
New Bedford, MA.
