SUMMARY:Since We Last Spoke: A UMassD Illustration Alumni Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us during aha! June 13th 4pm-7pm for an opening art exhibition featuring the UMassD Illustration Alumni and a live musical performance by Skyjelly! Since We Last Spoke will be on display at Groundwork June 3-June 28th. Visitors are welcome M-F 9am-2pm\n.\nGroundwork is thrilled to welcome UMassD graduates for an exhibition that celebrates the art of illustration. Since losing the Star Store\, faculty and students of UMassD’s College of Visual Performing Arts have been eager to reconnect with the New Bedford art community\, and this exhibition is the seed of new beginnings.\n.\n\n“125 years ago\, the Quest Center was part of the Swain School of Design\, a creative force during New Bedford’s manufacturing heyday. Now a part of UMass Dartmouth’s College of Visual Performing Arts (CVPA)\, those art\, design\, and artisanry students are making their way through a very different world. Graduates today have to be creative not just with the work that they create\, but in how they generate and find opportunities for themselves. In exhibiting here at Groundwork\, these UMass Dartmouth graduates are harkening back to CVPA’s roots. This exhibition also includes work that celebrates Pride month. The LGBTQIA+ community is well represented in the world of illustration\, and has contributed in major ways to the field.\n.\nIllustration is art that speaks to people in a direct\, accessible way\, even when it is un-commissioned work. It does not need to be attached to a text. Recent Illustration alumni are organizing community art events\, publishing webcomics\, exhibiting at local festivals\, illustrating Marvel characters\, tarot card decks\, murals\, solo gallery exhibitions\, and more. They cover a broad swath of creative output that can attach itself to nearly any field. The work on exhibit here ranges widely in style\, process\, and subject matter\, but even then it does not cover all of what illustration can be.”\n.\n\n– Jess Worby\, Assistant Teaching Professor\, Illustration\n\n\nCollege of Visual and Performing Arts at UMD\n\n.\n\nThis event is supported in part by the Wicked Cool Places grant funded by the City of New Bedford & facilitated by NB Creative

SUMMARY:Double Take with Robin Nunes and Barbara Healy
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Groundwork Gallery on May 9th at 5pm for an art opening reception featuring artists Robin Nunes and Barbara Healy. This is a free event and open to the public. Double Take will be on display from May 1st – June 1st. Guests are welcome to drop-in for a gallery visit during our business hours Monday-Friday 9am-2pm. \nRobin Nunes is a full time award-winning fine artist who lives and paints in South Dartmouth. She is a member of the Attleboro Art Museum\, Southcoast Artists\, Four Corners Gallery\, and Westport Art Group. Robin is from Chesapeake\, Virginia\, where she would often visit the capturing canals and beautiful coastlines in her backyard. Her art journey began in the mangroves of Key West\, and has migrated to the beautiful South Coastal region of Southern Massachusetts. Her love of Nature has brought her to the love of painting en plein air. Beaches and birds are her favorite subjects to paint.\n\nWhether it’s painting seascapes or landscapes\, her use of a palette knife adds a whimsical and playful approach to her art. She is currently represented by Norton Gallery\, Padanaram\, Attleboro Art Museum\, Attleboro\, MA\, Four Corners Gallery\, Historical Tiverton\, RI\, and Spring Bull Gallery\, Newport RI\, Fakes and Forgeries Exhibit. Ms Nunes is a graduate from UMASS and in addition to being an artist\, is the author of The Nunes Family Cookbook and had her first book signing at the Miami International Book Fair.\n\n\nBarbara Healy is a contemporary artist working in oils and acrylics. A Connecticut native\, Barbara fell in love with the South Coast\, and her husband Shaun\, while getting her BFA at UMASS Dartmouth and stayed. Her studio in Dartmouth\, MA has been on the South Coast Artists Open Studio Tour for 13 years.  She is a board member of Westport Art Group\, a Juried Artist Member of the Cape Cod Art Center\, and also teaches painting. Her award-winning paintings are in Massachusetts and Rhode Island galleries and corporate collections including Bristol County Savings Bank in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham.\n“My paintings are inspired by the diverse colors of light in the beautiful coastal landscape where I live.  I frequently paint plein air\, using all my senses to share my vision. Paintings capture that feeling of peace and joy that nature gives. I look for what is unique\, to convey a sense of place. Although often evoked by a fleeting moment\, I translate in paint to transcend time. Brushstrokes over glimpses of color intentionally reveal some of the painting process and layering enables me to create luminous color. Although I love oil paints on canvas\, I am always experimenting.”
