SUMMARY:Personal Space: Paintings by Daniel Kornrumph
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Groundwork! Gallery to celebrate a new show of paintings by local artist Daniel Kornrumph. \nArtist Statement\nDocumenting a time where paths cross\, Daniel Kornrumpf’s paintings are biased\, imperfect\, visual transmissions painted from observation of the people that make up his personal story. Learning through the process of discovery that occurs in painting\, Daniels’ work focuses on elements that emotionally sharpen the idea of solitude\, need\, and desire. The individuals in Daniel’s paintings act as vehicles for connection; a connection to shared values\, to the spaces we inhabit\, and as a way to understand his own sense of existence. \nAbout Daniel\nDaniel Kornrumpf grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia\, PA. He earned his BFA from Kutztown University where he majored in painting. He attended graduate school\, earning his MFA at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts focusing on painting and textiles. Daniel then moved to Cambridge\, MA to teach design courses at Newbury College where he continued to painting and make embroideries in his Somerville studio. Daniel’s work has been published in New American Paintings\, Fiber Art Now\, and the Huffington Post to name a few. He has exhibited his work locally including the DeCordova Museum and Simmons College\, as well as nationally at the Scope Miami Art Fair and Schmidt Dean gallery in Philadelphia. His work is currently represented by Blank Space Gallery in New York. Daniel presently lives in Berkley\, Massachusetts teaching Art Foundation and Design courses at Mount Ida College and Emmanuel College. He will be moving into a new studio in the Co-Creative Space in Downtown New Bedford this Fall.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Other Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reception in the Groundwork Gallery to celebrate the group show “Other Worlds.” \nThe show will be on view Oct 2 – 31\, 2017. \nAbout the show:\nOther Worlds is an exhibition of painting and prints by four recent graduates of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The visual works of Zachary M. White\, Bruce Bailey\, Will Wolf\, and L. Noah Barrett will be accompanied by the original compositions of sound artist Christopher Bailey. Each artist featured brings a unique perspective in regards to their materials\, methods\, and imagery ranging from semi-representational to fully abstract. \nMaps and mapping are central in the prints and paintings of Zachary M. White\, the lines and layers that make up much of the work have been placed and formed as a result of the visual mapping of the subject matter. The literary works of William Butler Yeats\, Thomas Hardy\, and William Gibson haunted painter and retired software engineer Bruce Bailey and lead to the creation of his series of abstract paintings. 2016 MFA graduate Will Wolf’s ‘nontwo-dimensional paintings’ were created as a means for the artist to explore emotions andmemories and describe the feelings associated as a way of examining his personal growth since childhood. Painter and illustrator Noah Barrett’s ‘invented still-life’ pieces create surrealist spaces wrought from memory\, experience\, and emotion that are formed into hybridized objects as a way to provide viewers a more complex narrative. Composer \nChristopher Bailey drew inspiration from the works of the four visual artists to produce his sound/musical accompaniment that is meant to serve as a ‘random walk’ around a map of sound objects. \nAbout the artists:\nZachary M. White\nZachary White was born in New Bedford\, Massachusetts. He earned his BFA in Visual Design-Photography with a minor in Fine Arts-Printmaking in May 2015 and later a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in May 2017 from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Zachary’s work has been published in A Picture History of New Bedford: Volume One 1602-1925 (Spinner Publications\, 2013)\, Reconstructing History: The Redevelopment of New Bedford in the\n20th Century (Self-published\, 2015)\, and A Picture History of New Bedford: Volume Two 1925-1980 (Spinner Publications\, 2015). His work\, which is heavily influenced by New Bedford\nand its history as well as cartography\, has also been included in various exhibitions throughout Massachusetts. \n\nBruce Bailey\nBruce is a retired software engineer living in South Dartmouth who has returned to his first passion of painting after 45 years of work in the steel\, shipbuilding\, and aerospace industries.\nHis experience in adapting from the industrial economy of the 1960’s to the current digital multiverse has given him an informed sense of history. He and his wife have three grown\nchildren and three grandchildren. When asked he is happy to go on for hours describing what it is like to work in a blast\nfurnace\, build double-hulled oil tankers or test flight control software for helicopters\, but\, if provoked\, he is also capable of a few words about painting\, literature\, and music. \n\nWill Wolf\nWilliam Wolf was born on October 2\, 1988 in Phoenixville\, Pennsylvania. He graduated with his BFA in Painting from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and his MFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Along with his studio practice\, Wolf has worked in community education with at-risk youth in his community. He currently lives and works in\nNew Bedford\, MA.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Rope to Trope
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate “Rope to Trope\,” a solo exhibition by Alex Buchanan. \nArtist Statement\nArguably the most vital material utilized across the ever-industrious maritime industry by rugged expendables\, tells a story greater than the one it mimics by being weathered\, strained\, discarded and replaced. Now tattered and frayed\, its imperfections become intentional and humbly individualize themselves\, reflecting personal experiences\, conquests over the horizon\, and even moments of vulnerability.  They echo\, “We are sailors and we come from the sea.” \nIf they told you they were going to show you the ropes\, they’re not really talking about rope at all.  That’s a trope\, and in this case I’m not only referencing figurative and literal meaning simultaneously.  The elements which culminate what you see become a tangible trope.  It is meaning beyond the material\, but with respect for the fiber strong enough to believe in a cherished commodity\, both new and old.  Your desire to interact with its tactility reflects not only object quality and subtlety of texture in the source material\, but the solitary state of life at sea\, and the transcendent state of yearning. \nArtist Bio\nAlex Buchanan (Born in Boston\, Massachusetts) is an artist and merchant marine who received a BFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston. Alex also served four years active duty and began his journeys at sea in the U.S. Coast Guard.  He focuses on his nautical influences and conveys them as a visual language by layering literal and conceptual translations in plain sight.  Alex has exhibited on the East and West Coast\, and he resides in New Bedford\, Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Closing Reception & Artist Talk: Umberto Crenca and William Schaff
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the closing of this blockbuster exhibition of works by Rhode Island-based artists Umberto Crenca and William Schaff. The reception will include an artist talk! \nUmberto Crenca (Bert) is a visual artist\, performance artist\, and musician with a long exhibition and performance history. His work appears in the permanent collections of the Rhode Island School of Design and Newport Art Museums\, and in numerous private collections. \nBest known for being co-founder and longtime artistic director of AS220\, a nonprofit center for the arts in downtown Providence\, Bert is a passionate advocate of the conviction that all people should have access to the means to cultivate and express their creativity. He has received numerous honors and awards for his community work and holds honorary doctorates from Roger Williams and Brown Universities. \nWilliam Schaff has been a working artist for over two decades. Known primarily for his mastery at album artwork\, (Okkervil River\, Godspeed\nYou! Black Emperor\, Mighty Mighty Bosstones\, Songs: Ohia\, etc.) Schaff is also the founder of Warren Rhode Island’s “Fort Foreclosure”. The building\, lovingly named without the least bit of irony\, serves as Schaff’s home and studio as well as home and meeting place for other artists (most notably resident musicians MorganEve Swain\, and the Late David Lamb\, both of Brown Bird). William\, recognizing the importance of art in this world\, recently expanded his community to the West Coast\, where he started “The Outpost”\, in Oakland\, California. William filled his days creating works of art for private commissions\, bands\, exhibitions and his own examinations of human interaction. He has since returned to Rhode Island and can be found\, daily\, working in the Fort. \nWe will have music\, food and drinks on hand! Come see this extensive exhibit and meet the artists!

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: The Artwork of Richard Goulis and Paul Everett
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the opening of Artwork by Richard Goulis and Paul Everette. During the opening there will be a one of a kind\, original interactive performance by Richard Goulis. \nRichard Goulis is a multi-media artist and came to Providence in 1980 to attend the Rhode Island School of Design. During his studies in the Film/Animation/Video department he became aware of the local artistic community due to his frequent forays into the mysterious city and his development of various artistic projects outside the RISD community. His earliest performance art pieces have become part of the lexicon within the Rhode Island and RISD community and beyond. He was the recipient of the RISCA Fellowship for New Genres and numerous RISCA project grants\, as well as research and development grants from The Rhode Island Council for the Humanities. His performance work has been seen at festivals around the world and his video pieces are in the collection of The Museum of Art\, Rhode Island School of Design\, Corning Museum of Glass\, and many private collections. \nThrough his video work on the NetWorks series (a Rhode Island-based arts project co-created with Umberto Crenca and produced annually by Joseph A. Chazan\, M.D. since 2008) he has showcased the work of selected artists who have played vital roles in shaping the contemporary visual arts community in Rhode Island. The collection of brief video portraits\, which is currently being shown on public television\, provides a window into the lives\, practices\, and cultural contributions of professional artists. \nHe is currently working with Sheryl Kopel on a documentary project about the Artist Space\, AS220 in Providence\, RI. \nHe is the Founding Artist Director of The Worcester Artist Group\, in Worcester\, MA and was the Founding Artistic Director of The Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque\, NM. \nAbout Paul Everett \nI grew up in an artistic\, creative family. From an early age\, I was enrolled in various art classes. I had a cup of coffee at RISD\, which was interrupted by a brief tour with the band I was singing with at the time. Thus ended my higher education in the arts. I’ve been singing for various bands (including Coat of Arms\, Plan 9\, and currently Hope Anchor)\, have toured most of this continent playing music\, and was recently inducted into the R.I. Music Hall of Fame. All the while\, there has been engagement in the visual arts\, as well. \nEarly on\, I painted watercolors and drew the figure and landscape. This grew into a love for printmaking and eventually shifted to a focus on painting. I paint primarily in acrylics\, but will use whatever is at hand for applied and surface media. \nThe work is typically non-representational and abstract\, but is informed by land-patterns and cityscapes with merging vantage points\, as well as an attention to design aesthetic. Nature versus industry is a common thread throughout most of my work. \nI paint at night\, usually in poor light\, and this adds a degree of natural spontaneity and surprise to the process. Painting is a cathartic process for me\, and so each piece conveys its own emotionality. Working in the abstract allows me to engage honestly in the cathartic whim\, or moment.

SUMMARY:The Inner Workings of Joe Banda - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of Joe Banda June 1st 6-9pm.\nThe show will be up until July 6th. \nJoe Banda: My artwork is an ongoing conversation I have with myself. I focus mainly on my anxiety\, fears\, failures\, and disappointments. I am motivated by the frustration of working a day job\, current events\, political uneasiness\, and seasonal depression. \nI am influenced by American folk art\, Japanese block printing\, contemporary tattooing\, outsider art and all things counter culture. I use a stream of conscious approach while working\, to keep an honest representation of my own human experience. \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the New Bedford and Dartmouth Local Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency

SUMMARY:Gallery Opening Reception - Variation x 3
DESCRIPTION:Details on new work\, coming soon! Please join us July 13th 6-9pm at Groundwork! For the opening reception of Jade Gotauco\, Matt Finger and M. Caszhen. The Gallery is open Mon-Fri 9-5. Weekends are by appointment only. \nJade Gotauco: Jade is self-taught artist\, born and raised in Rhode Island. She has been working professionally as an artist in many mediums since 2005. From 2008-2010\, she operated Go Gallery on Bellevue Avenue in Newport\, across the street from the acclaimed Newport Art Museum. At that point\, she wished to focus on producing more work in an intimate informal setting. And so began GOstudio. Jade gels best with the vibe of Warren’s working class fishing village\, so that’s where you’ll find GOstudio today. \nJade’s work is primarily in oil painting and scrimshaw\, but she rarely shies away from trying something new. Newer works introduce visual meditations on food\, politics\, music\, and both the privilege and struggle of being a working artist in our society. \nOn a constant mission to stay mindful in this fast-paced American life\, Jade utilizes the color spectrum from black to white\, attempting to uncover the balance within chaos. Raised in a mixed culture from Asian to Irish\, from fishermen to musicians and lawyers\, the eclectic nature of her upbringing has developed into a lifestyle that insists upon a compulsion to explore\, learn\, and create beyond the comfort of tradition. \nMatt Finger: Matt Finger’s pieces are created with a variety of media including acrylic paint\, chip board\, gessoed papers\, MDF board and resin. When completed the pieces have a glassy\, tile-like feel. The work tends to work well in small series or grids. Within the paintings\, he explores color harmony and variations of texture and form. \nM. Caszhen: M. Caszhen is an established working artist gone rogue. Using found items dating from ancient to vintage\, they move away from their traditional 2D style and into a probe of multidimensional shape\, body\, and time. Caszhen has been producing and selling their work since 1992 throughout the New England area.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Character by Mark Gleicher
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of “Character\,” a solo show by Mark Gleicher in the Groundwork Gallery. \nMark Gleicher\, has lived and worked as an artist on the SouthCoast for almost 30 years. These days you will most often find him tooling around his home studio in Little Compton where he continues to create signature works that carry on a tradition of weird and limitless art making. \nThis exhibit is only his second ever solo show and the first since his Mid Career Survey at the Dartmouth Town Hall Art Gallery in 2010. \nCHARACTER is a collection of new work and greatest hits. Many of the pieces are collaborations with his long-time partner\, James Boutin with a few featuring his daughter Lily and an assorted group of friends and misanthropes. It is moody and fantastic; silly\, druggie\, dark and honest. \nCHARACTER will be on view at the Groundwork Gallery June 1-30. Hours are M-Th 9-5 and F 9-1. Masks are required inside the gallery.
